Chief Rich Cowger

Chief Cowger started his fire service career as a volunteer with the Fromberg Fire District in 1992. Moving to Columbus in 1993, he progressed through the ranks of the Columbus Rural Fire District, becoming a Captain in 1995. He was appointed Assistant Chief in 1996 and then Fire Chief for the Town of Columbus in 1999. In 2000 he was also appointed Chief of the Rural Fire District. Chief Cowger was instrumental in bringing the town and rural fire districts together through inter-local agreements.
Chief Cowger is the President of the Stillwater County Fire Council and sits on the Southern Land Office MOB Board, along with the State Wildland Committee. He is also heavily involved with the Montana Mutual Aid system. As of 2008, he became the first fulltime Fire Chief of the combined Town of Columbus and Rural Fire District.
Chief Cowger and his wife, Deanna have two children, Colton and Cassie. He enjoys traveling with his family, working with horses and cows and is currently taking flying lessons.
